Donna DePinto, the Artist Owner of D'Bella Salon in South Brunswick, spoke on March 17, 2018 at the South Brunswick Commission on Women's Leadership Conference. Ms. DePinto was featured on a panel about Vocational Careers. Together with a professional Massage Therapist and a successful Caterer, Ms. DePinto spoke to a group of students interested in learning more about pursuing a vocational career after high school.

The panel had fun discussing the opportunities and challenges they faced, the discipline and commitment they needed, and the ideas and goals that inspired them to purse a career that really meant something to them, and allowed them to do and express what what truly important to them.

Ms. DePinto spoke from the heart about her journey in fashion, beauty, modeling and business, and how she eventually signed up to attend the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School where she trained to be a professonial Hair Artist. She explained how learning that trade gave her the knowledge and valuable skills to earn money right away, and by working and gaining more experience and knowledge, she was able to open her own salon.

Ms. DePinto and her fellow speakers encouraged the students to pursue their heart's interest, to find a mentor for encouragement and guidance, and to research the field they want to pursue. Ms. DePinto thoughtfully reminded the students to respect themselves with good nutrition, and to be cautious about letting other people discourage or influencce their determination to stay true to themselves. Her inspirational message gave the students a positive outlook on the future by pursing a meaningful career.

THE RELUCTANT MAKEOVER: NOW IN THE PRINCETON PACKET!

November 13, 2015: Writer Nicole M. Wells shares her makeover story at D'Bella Salon this week in the Princeton Packet.

I am not the ideal makeover candidate.

While some women wield thermal hair appliances with the grace of a Degas dancer and blend pigments galore effortlessly on their cheekbone palettes, I do not count myself among them.

I never have.

My skill with the blow dryer being what it is, my hair’s natural wave won every meeting engagement simply by default, by virtue of the fact that I readily conceded.

Similarly, I’ve never been very good at spackling my face with the creams and powders necessary to achieve that fresh, flawless look. You know, the one that jumps out at you from the glossy pages of countless fashion magazines.

My fresh and flawless could be summed up in two words: au naturel.

Enter Donna DePinto.

Put together and polished, the owner of D’Bella Salon in Kendall Park saw promise in my remarkably understated presentation and offered to do a complete makeover.

Being an exceedingly low-maintenance kind of girl, I was apprehensive, to say the least. Ms. DePinto, however, was as enthused and energetic as a fifth-grader on the last day of school, eager to work me over with a new look.

Salon owner revisits her roots with new location
D’Bella Salon has moved to Rt. 27 in South Brunswick
BY KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — Donna DePinto has moved her business to the town where she grew up, and she couldn’t be happier about it.

With the help of state Sen. Sam Thompson (R-12), DePinto said she was able to secure a U.S. Small Business Administration loan that enabled her to relocate her D’Bella Salon from a 930-square-foot space in Franklin Township to a new 2,200-squarefoot location in the Quick Chek plaza at Route 27 and Henderson Road in the Kendall Park section of South Brunswick.

“It was last June when I saw [that] this location was open after stopping for coffee at the Quick Chek,” she said. “I immediately called the number, which happened to be the landlord’s.”

DePinto, a former model with more than 20 years in the beauty industry, said the new location offers the business more visibility and more space after a decade at the former location.

“We only had four stations, and this site allows us to expand to 10 stations, [with the] potential for a lot of growth,” she said.

DePinto said she is grateful for the help she received from South Brunswick officials and her hometown community.

On April 5, DePinto, along with her 22- member team, held a red-carpet grand opening of the new space, with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting by Thompson. The date marked exactly 11 years since the opening of D’Bella Salon.

DePinto said her team offers an array of services that is open to everyone. The employees apply their knowledge of the latest in fashion, hair color, hairstyles, makeup and cultural beauty to each customer, she said.

DePinto said she believes in working with the community and other establishments so that they can feed off each other and add to their successes.

“We are right next door to a nail salon, which is a great complement to our establishment,” she said.

The salon is participating in a Seventeen magazine event at the Freehold Raceway Mall on May 17, and will take part in Skate and Surf Fest 2013 at iPlay America in Freehold on May 18-19.

On June 10, the salon will again host a Locks of Love event at Indian Fields Elementary School in South Brunswick. Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the U.S. and Canada suffering from long-term medical hair loss.

June 2012: D'Bella Salon participated in the Locks of Love Event at Indian Hills School in South Brunswick!

At Indian Fields, over 20 donors signed up to cut their hair for the Locks of Love program. Locks of Love is a public nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the U.S. and Canada suffering from longterm medical hair loss. The Owner and Artists of D'Bella Salon donated their time to cut and style hair for those who donated.

D'Bellla Owner Donna DePinto said it feels special for her and her team of seven stylists to participate because she is a graduate of South Brunswick High School. DePinto said anywhere from 5 to 10 clients a year donate to Locks of Love at her salon, and it is often an emotional experience for the donor.

A lot of women and men have cancer, and we have to give back to them on the beauty side to let them feel confident about themselves, DePinto said. It is very strong for someone to cut 10 or 11 inches off their hair. Its completely changing their image.

Businesses helping businesses is the new fashion
D'Bella Salon, Fire N Ice hosted fashion show to promote networking
BY JENNIFER AMATO Staff Writer

Rachel Van Avery sat in a chair in front of a large mirror.

Her sister, Nicole, began combing her hair, going from a slight poof to a part and then to a simple yet elegant design.

Donna DePinto, owner of D'Bella Salon, 3171 Route 27, Franklin Park, came over with an eyeshadow brush, applying a dark metallic shade to Rachel's eyelids.

"A smoky eye is exactly what's in style right now. You can't go anywhere without fake eyelashes and smoky eyes," DePinto said.

Rachel Van Avery, who is part of the Miss New Jersey American Coed Pageant, was one of 10 models who participated in the D'Bella Fashion Show, held at Fire N Ice in Woodbridge Oct. 28. DePinto and Riz Awwal, the owner of Fire N Ice, decided this would be a good opportunity for small businesses to help other small businesses.

"I think as an entrepreneur we should all help each other get through the recession. I think we are all trying to survive," DePinto said. "Whether it be a hookah lounge, whether it be a clothing line, we are all within the same circle and can branch off one another."

The Fashion Affair Fall 2010 show featured the services of Nicole Van Avery, 20, a North Brunswick resident who is a massage therapist, receptionist and apprentice at D'Bella Salon, as well as fellow employees Lauren Mazukiewicz, a makeup artist, and Bonnie Roman, a hairstylist.

The clothing was provided by Kara Fashions from the Menlo Park Mall in Edison; Rachel Van Avery wore a black A-line dress for the show. She also had on the new OPI Cabaret nail polish.

"Fire N Ice's mission is ... encouraging an alliance of New Jersey businesses that have risen from entrepreneurial roots," a press release about the show stated. "The involvement of Allied Beverage, Kara Fashions, D'Bella Salon and Tribe Visions [photography] in this show will initiate the cross-marketing between businesses across New Jersey and encourage long-term relationships among them."

Salon shows that beauty is not only skin deep
D'Bella Salon offering specials during difficult economy
BY JENNIFER AMATO Staff Writer

Donna DePinto is no stranger to the beauty business.

A former model, the 43-year-old former South Brunswick resident pursued a fashion career in New York City in 1983. She modeled billboards for Newport cigarettes and filmed a few commercials for the Mc- Donald/Richards agency.

She then opened the Harbor View Restaurant in Brooklyn, N.Y. She said the movies "Coming to America," "Someone to Watch Over Me," and "Scent of a Woman," were all filmed at her location on Water Street.

After taking a year off, De- Pinto said she went back to the fashion world and took a cosmetics course at Visage Beaute in Beverly Hills, Calif. Previously wanting to become a skin doctor because of various skin problems she has faced throughout her life, DePinto instead became a custom blender, formulating her own hypo-allergenic, oil-controlled makeup.

Living back on the East Coast, DePinto worked at a nail salon on and off for eight years, and as a graduate of South Brunswick High School, she attended the VoTech adult school in East Brunswick.

"I don't think you need to go to the highest school to be prestigious," she said. "You can be good and great, but nobody is the best, because then you shut down knowledge."

DePinto, who has even been featured as the model for a romance novel cover, then decided to open D'Bella Salon by Donna on Route 27 south about six years ago, providing her clients with salon services such as hair, nail, makeup, skin care, waxing and massages, along with boutique products such as handbags and jewelry. She said she wanted to keep a small environment "so you feel a little bit of warmth" and designed the 1,000-square-foot studio space "like my living room."
